Beyond the Score and Concert Moments

Gain insight and historical perspective on the music you hear on concert evenings with Beyond the Score and Concert Moments. Beyond the Score presentations take place on stage as part of the performance with comments by Music Director John Jeter and musical excerpts performed by the entire orchestra. Concert Moments are presented prior to Symphony performances and provide background on the evening’s featured composers and guest artists. Beyond the Score will be presented on October 2, October 23 and April 16. Concert Moments will be presented on April 16 at 6:50 p.m. off the lobby of the Arkansas Best Corporation Performing Arts Center.

Naxos Recording Project

The Fort Smith Symphony is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of orchestral works that define and enhance Arkansas’ rich musical heritage. In late 2011, the orchestra’s third recording on the Naxos label will be released internationally. Naxos is the largest classical label in the world. The project will follow the success of the Symphony’s two releases in 2005 and 2009, to continue the preservation of unrecorded works by William Grant Still, Arkansas’ most significant composer and the most celebrated of all African-American composers. Part of Naxos’ popular American Classics Series, the recording will feature Still’s Symphony No. 2, Symphony No. 3 and Wood Notes. This recording will finish the first complete set of William Grant Still symphonies ever recorded. Visit www.naxos.com or fine retailers across the globe to enjoy a significant piece of Arkansas heritage performed by Arkansas’ oldest orchestra.

This program was made possible in part by a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage, funded by General Improvement Funds provided by the Arkansas 86th General Assembly.
